Why 1 km/h faster isn’t always the same gain
Pace is time divided by distance, so it is the reciprocal of speed. That makes the relationship a curve, not a straight line. Drag the speed and watch how much time one extra km/h buys you.
Going from 10.0 to 11.0 km/h saves 33 seconds per km — that is 23:01 over a marathon.
At jogging speeds each km/h is worth a lot of pace; for elites it’s worth only a few seconds. It’s why a beginner’s 5K PR can fall by minutes while a sub-elite fights for every second.
How the pace calculator works
Pace = time ÷ distance. Time = pace × distance, and distance = time ÷ pace. Everything is converted to seconds and metres first, using the exact definition of a mile (1,609.344 m), so switching units never introduces rounding drift.
Enter times as h:mm:ss or mm:ss (a single number is read as minutes). Race presets use the official distances: half marathon 21.0975 km, marathon 42.195 km.
Planning a race from here
- Know a recent race result? The race time predictor projects it to every other distance.
- Want to train at the right effort? The VDOT calculator turns that result into easy, marathon, threshold, interval and repetition paces.
- Running indoors? The treadmill pace chart converts belt speed to pace, including incline.
- Got a specific target? Split sheets for 4:00, 3:30 and 3:00 marathons, a 2:00 half and a sub-20 5K.
- Chasing a goal time? Look it up on the marathon, half marathon, 10K or 5K pace chart.
Questions runners ask
How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide your finish time by the distance. A 5K in 25:00 is 25 minutes ÷ 5 km = 5:00 per kilometre, or 25 ÷ 3.107 miles = 8:03 per mile. The calculator above does this for any distance and also works backwards to a finish time or a distance.
What is a good running pace for a beginner?
Most new runners start somewhere between 6:00 and 8:00 per kilometre (roughly 10:00–13:00 per mile) on easy runs. The right easy pace is one you can hold while speaking in full sentences; speed comes from consistency, not from forcing the pace.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (minutes per km or mile); speed is distance per time (km/h or mph). They are reciprocals: 12 km/h is exactly 5:00 per km. Runners use pace because it maps directly to splits on a watch.
What is a good running pace?
It depends on age, experience and distance. For many recreational runners easy runs sit around 9:00–12:00 per mile (5:35–7:30 per km), while 5K race pace is a minute or two per mile faster. The best benchmark is your own trend over time, not someone else’s pace.
How many kilometres are in a mile?
One mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so a per-mile pace is 1.609 times a per-km pace. 5:00/km equals 8:02.7 per mile.
Why does my GPS watch disagree with the course distance?
GPS traces cut and add corners, and tall buildings or trees scatter the signal. Certified road courses are measured along the shortest possible line, so most runners record 0.5–1.5% more distance than the official figure. Pace off the official distance for race planning.
