Running the half to a plan

The half marathon is long enough to punish a fast start and short enough that you can race hard for the final 5K. The most reliable pattern is steady to 10 miles, then spend whatever is left. Check the 5K and 10K columns rather than every mile to avoid staring at your watch.

Your half marathon pace sits a little slower than lactate threshold for most runners, about the effort of Daniels’ threshold pace plus 10–15 seconds per mile. It’s also a good goal-setting race: the race predictor turns a half into a sensible marathon target.

Questions runners ask

What pace is a 2-hour half marathon?

9:09 per mile or 5:41 per kilometre. You reach 10K in 56:53 and 10 miles in 1:31:32.

What pace do I need for a sub-1:30 half marathon?

6:52 per mile (4:16 per km) finishes in 1:29:59. Passing 10K in about 42:40 keeps you on schedule.

What is a good half marathon time?

Finishing is an achievement at any time. Across big-city results most runners finish between 1:50 and 2:30; under 1:45 puts many age-group runners in the top quarter of the field.

How far is a half marathon?

21.0975 km, which is 13.1094 miles — exactly half of the marathon’s 42.195 km.

How much slower is marathon pace than half marathon pace?

Using the Riegel formula, marathon pace is roughly 4–5% slower per mile than half marathon pace for a well-trained runner, which is why a 1:45 half usually predicts a marathon around 3:39–3:45.
